Installing GenoPro

The installation of GenoPro is quite easy.  If you are reading this page, it is likely you have successfully installed GenoPro.

Q: Do you have a Macintosh or Linux version of GenoPro?
A: No. GenoPro has chosen to improve its current version on the Windows platform rather than producing multiple versions of GenoPro for multiple operating systems.

Q: What version of Windows GenoPro runs?
A: GenoPro has been tested on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Q: What is the minimum hardware to run GenoPro?
A: GenoPro was tested on a 386 with 4 MB of RAM running Windows 95.  Of course this is not the optimal hardware, but you can build your genealogy tree with such a computer. It is highly recommended to run GenoPro on Windows NT/2000/XP to edit large genealogy trees.   To run Windows NT 4.0, you need a minimum of a Pentium with 32 MB of RAM.   Pictures best viewed on True Color display, so if you can't have True Color (24 bits) try to set your display settings to High Color (16 bits).

Q: What are the minimum files required to run GenoPro?
A: You only need one file: GenoPro.exe (800 KB).  For instance, if you want to distribute your genealogy tree on a floppy disk, all you need to put on the floppy is GenoPro.exe and your genealogy tree.

Q: I want to make a CD-ROM with my family tree on it, what should I do?
A: Make sure you copy InstallGenoPro.exe and InstallMfcDLL.exe on the CD.  The file InstallMfcDLL.exe is optional, however may occasionally be required by InstallGenoPro.exe when installing GenoPro on Windows 95.
            http://www.genopro.com/InstallGenoPro.exe (1.4 MB)
            http://www.genopro.com/InstallMfcDLL.exe (625 KB)
Tip:  You can generate an HTML report in the same folder as you copied your genealogy tree (.gno file).  The HTML report gives detailed information about each individual and family and does not require GenoPro to view and/or print your family data.

Q: Can I put GenoPro available for download from my web site?
A: Yes. If you are interested having your download area, you are welcome to do so. If you want, you can copy the HTML pages from GenoPro.com site and customize them or translate them to your own taste. It is preferable you put a link to http://www.genopro.com/InstallGenoPro.exe to allow people to always download the latest version of GenoPro. If you make a copy of InstallGenoPro.exe to your web site, then you have to periodically update the file when a new version is available

Upgrading GenoPro

GenoPro has a built-in feature to make it easy to upgrade.  Use the "Check for Update" dialog located in the Help menu to determine if there is a newer version available.  Simply click on the "Download" button to download the most recent version of GenoPro.  If you have GenoPro Gold, the Download button will download GenoPro Gold, otherwise will download the freeware version GenoPro.

The upgrade is a one-click process and 100% safe to keep all your files, including all your .gno files with their pictures.

Q: I have purchased GenoPro Gold and upgraded to a version of GenoPro with advertising.
A: To upgrade GenoPro Gold, you have to enter your GoldenKey in the About box before clicking the "Check for Update" button.  You only need to enter your GoldenKey once because GenoPro remembers your GoldenKey on your hard disk.

Q: I created a large family tree.  Is is possible the new version overwrite it?
A: Never.  The Setup program only upgrades GenoPro's files.

Q: Will GenoPro version 2.0 read my family tree created using version 1.x?
A: You bet!  The upgrade to version GenoPro 2.0 will be as easy as any other upgrade of GenoPro.

Uninstalling GenoPro

Q: How do I uninstall GenoPro?
A: You may uninstall GenoPro from the Control Panel (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Uninstall -> GenoPro -> Remove) or by double-clicking on the file Uninstall.exe located in the folder where you installed GenoPro (typically C:\Program Files\GenoPro\).

Q: Does uninstalling GenoPro deletes my genealogy files?
A: No.  When you install GenoPro, the installer creates a log of all the files it installed on your machine.  When you uninstall GenoPro, the uninstaller simply opens the log and delete each files installed by GenoPro, including the shortcuts in the Start menu and Desktop.

Installation Problems

Q: I get a message about a missing MFC42.DLL
A: Your machine is missing a system library. This is a rare case less than 1% of all machines. Download http://www.genopro.com/InstallMfcDLL.exe and double-click on it. The program InstallMfcDLL.exe will install mfc42.dll and msvcrt.dll into the Windows system directory (folder).

Q: I get a message about missing export in MFC42.DLL (missing MFC42.DLL:6453)
A: Your system has an old version of MFC42.DLL.  Download InstallMfcDLL.exe and double-click on it.

Q: I'm having problems viewing the online help
A: You must have a Web browser to view the online help. If you don't have one, you can install Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.  GenoPro recommends Internet Explorer to view genealogy trees within your browser.

Q: I can't view the sample .gno files within the online help
A:   1. You must have installed GenoPro on your machine.
       2. You must use a web browser capable to host an ActiveX control. So far, only Microsoft Internet Explorer supports ActiveX controls.
