Birth And Death

Birth and Death Properties

Date of Birth

Enter the birth date of the individual.  You can enter a partial date such as "Sep-1974" or "1974" if you can't remember the exact date.   GenoPro accepts dates from year 0001 to year 9999.

Child Number

Enter the child rank in the family.  GenoPro uses the child number and the date of birth to sort children from the oldest to the youngest (or vice-versa).   GenoPro does not enforce the child number to be consecutive or unique because there are special cases such as an adopted child or a child who died at a very young age to have a special number.

Deceased

Check this checkbox to indicate the member died.  A cross (X) will be displayed on the genealogy tree to indicate the member deceased.  If you enter a date of decease, the age will be displayed inside the gender symbol.

Deceased without displaying the age

Deceseased with age displayed

Date of Decease

Enter a date greater than the date of birth.  If you try to enter a date prior the date of birth, GenoPro will ask you to enter a valid date.

Comments

Anything important/relevant to the decease of the individual.  You may enter a short description of the individual's decease.

Cause of Decease

Enter what caused the individual to decease.  Select the "Unknown" radio button if you don't know the cause of death.  The radio button "Information Not Available" indicates no information was entered about the cause of death.  This field will be used in future versions to generate reports and display statistics about a family.

Version 2.0 will have fields for place/city/country of birth and decease.

Display Attributes

Member Properties - Display Attributes Dialog

You can specify what information/attributes to be displayed to the genealogy tree.

First Name Only.  Display the first name of the individual.  This may be handy to avoid redundancy in a family where everyone has the same family name.
Last Name Only.  Display the last name of the individual.  Under some occasions, you may want to display the last name and ignore the first name.
First and Last Name Only.  Ignore the middle name.
Full Name.  This will display the first, middle and last name concatenated together.  Future releases will allow long names to wrap on two lines.
Date of Birth / Date of Death.  You may want to display or not display those dates in the genealogy tree.  You can display the year or the full date.  The force date wrap will display the date of birth and date of death on two separate lines.
Deceased Cross.  Deceased members have a cross (X) displayed in the genealogy tree.  If you have a large genealogy tree where everyone deceased long time ago, you may want to turn off this option.
Gender.  You may not wish to display the gender to the genealogy tree.  Hiding the gender is also a kludge to create a label.
Age.  Show the age inside the square and circles. If you wish to print a genealogy tree without the age inside the squares and circles, simply uncheck the "Display Age" menu item from the main menu before printing.
Tip You can change the display attributes of multiple selected objects in a single operation. Use the "View" properties of the selected objects.

Name Word Wrap

Number of lines to display the name in the genealogy tree.  You can set the value from a single line up to 7 lines.   The "Force Name Wrap" checkbox will force a new line between the first name, middle name and last name.

Aliasing

An alias is a mirror copy of an object and behaves like a label.  An alias can be handy when the same member is needed at more than one location in the genealogy tree.  Click here to find out when and how to create an alias.  Aliases are not included in any report nor exported in GEDCOM file.

Hyperlink new.gif (111 bytes)Hyperlink Sample

You may set a hyperlink to the home page of an individual.  An individual having an hyperlink has its name underlined and displayed in blue. The hyperlink should start with "http://" to point to an HTML page on the web or start with "mailto:" to include an email address.  If you have GenoPro installed on your machine, you may click on Miscellaneous.gno or MorinFamily.gno to test drive GenoPro's hyperlinks.

Tip You can create an hyperlink to any type of file.  You may have an hyperlink to another GenoPro document, an HTML home page, email address, a text file, a sound file or video clip.  When you click on the hyperlink, GenoPro will launch the associated application for the hyperlink target.

Example of an extended family tree

This is a fictive example of an extended family tree.  Here are the facts that can be extracted.

  1. Albert married Claire in 1978.
  2. Bob married Julie in 1975.
  3. Claire died in 1982 at the age of 29.
  4. Bob died in 1982 at the age of 32.
  5. Albert married Julie in 1984.  (Maybe they met at the hospital, since both Claire and Bob died in 1982).
  6. Mike is the child of Bob and Julie and was "adopted" when Albert married Julie.
  7. Merry is the child of Albert and Julie, and therefore Mike's half-sister.
  8. Pete is Header's big brother and Merry's half-brother.
  9. Mike has no genetic link with Pete or Header.
