Type the file name you want to import. The file can be any extension (something other than .ged) but the file must have a valid Gedcom content.
| Instead of typing the file name, you can drag & drop a file from the Windows Explorer into this dialog. |
Smartly convert the first, middle and last names into lowercase. Many Gedcom files have the names stored in capital letters, and if you wish, you can have GenoPro automatically convert capital into lowercase.
Import the entire Gedcom file into the current document.
If your Gedcom file is too large, you may wish to import only a fragment of it. The fundamental idea here is to specify an individual of interest and import relevant data for this individual.
Individual or Family ID: Specify the Gedcom ID (known as the XREF) to import. If you don't know the ID, you can use the Select button to browse the Gedcom file.
Include all Ancestors: Import all the ancestors of the individual. Use this option if you wish to extract the ancestor tree of a specific individual.
Include all Descendents: Import all the descendents of the individual. Use this option if you wish to extract the descendent tree of a specific individual.
Include individuals and families within a distance of x generations. Use this option if you wish to extract the surrounding families/individuals of a specific individual. GenoPro combines this option to the Ancestor and Descendent tree, meaning you can import the ancestor tree and all the individuals within a distance of x generations.
Q: After importing, I get overlapping branches. What can I
do?
A: Use the toolbar buttons
to select one overlapping branch of the tree and move it with the mouse.
To reduce the overlapping, try importing a different portion from the Gedcom
file by selecting a different ID and/or a different combination ancestors or
descendents. GenoPro is working on improving the logic of the AutoArrange,
so future versions should be much better importing Gedcom files.
Q: I am unable to scroll or view the genealogy tree.
A: You must have imported a very large Gedcom file. GenoPro is limited to coordinates between
-32,768 and +32,767 on Windows 95 and Windows 98. If you are having problems scrolling or
printing a large tree, click
here.

GenoPro has another useful tool to convert your Gedcom file to an HTML report. This tool has been tested on multiple Gedcom files and always produces sharp HTML reports. GenoPro tested the Gedcom to HTML tool on a Gedcom file having more than 20,000 individuals. |
To be safe, the individual's name is imported in the following format "FirstName/LastName/MiddleName". This decision was made to guarantee the preservation of the last name.
You can export your genealogy tree in the Gedcom format from the Tools menu. Simply select the menu item "Export GEDCOM..." and enter the filename you want to export your genealogy tree.
GenoPro can export your genealogy tree in the ANSEL or ANSI format. You can change the format in the Preferences Dialog.
